Basic Floral Shapes

Available 9/25/2024

In this introduction to freehand floral work, you will learn to create a foundation shape that represents a blueprint for all leaves, and all flowers. Using a simple shape replacement theory, you will be able to substitute elements to create anything from wild roses to delicate lavender. You will learn to quilt various views of your flowers, including head on, profile, and bud versions, as well as complementary shapes that will help you fill in your bouquets.

The focus of this class will be to learn how to get into and out of all the various flowers, and how to personalize them. Practicing your floral shapes will not yield a finished project, it might get a little messy, so, prepare to quilt with just some scrap muslin fabric.

If you are a sit down machine quilter, I recommend preparing 3-4 basted quilt sandwiches of about 1/2 yard x width of fabric, so you will have freedom of movement to practice.

If you are a longarm machine quilter, I recommend loading 2 yards of backing/batting/top fabric for practice.

If you have ever taken a class from me titled "Freehand Florals", you will find this section to be a reinforcement of that knowledge, with more in-depth floral design and creativity.
