Quilted Class Samples

We will start class by learning basic flowers, creating different perspectives with them and creating thematic additions, so our compositions can reflect a complex bouquet. In this sample, a great variety of flowers are generally moving on a serpentine, with a few wreath samples as well. Also, you can see one of the Derwent color effects you can try with the Bonus class.

This sample is quilted with a poppy derivative flower in a serpentine border, using floral elements in the classic half square block units, and with a blended, dense, floral edge to edge backfill, which is also color highlighted with Derwent projects. This particular quilt is a quilted panel. It is my hope to be able to offer the class a printed panel in several colors, if you choose, but I am waiting on a new manufacturer to send me a sample now. I will keep you updated!

This simple quilt is wonderful for showing off floral quilting. This is a classically pieced quilt with half square triangle blocks. It features a profile flower, repeated en masse in the body of the quilt and William Morris inspired "Blocks" in the border. You are welcome to duplicate a version of this quilt if you desire. My quilt is 11 x 11 rows of 4" finished half square triangles. I actually recommend making yours 10 x 10 rows...the 11th row created a considerable math headache for me! An even number of rows will be more flexible for you. A nice wide border is suggested...this one is 8". Please don't feel like you need to make a quilt...you do not. This class is about the process, no finished quilts are expected from you.

This quilt is an antique table cloth! Many linen table toppers of the 1930-1970's featured lovely floral prints like this. I particularly like the spacing on this table topper. It allowed me to show placing our flowers in the center in a mandala, illustrating how you will be able to morph flowers into any shape. Then, surround them with William Morris inspired corner pieces. Next was a nice open area, to show one of our grid based designs. Finally, I used a floral blended dense backfill around the outer edges.

These small wallhangings are wonderful quilts to illustrate and show off some of our basic flowers and classic quilt shapes. They are a simple framed square in a square and measure 25" square total. You are welcome to copy this design if you would like a similar project to work on as a kind of "final" finish. They each have a wreath, 4 related but different setting triangles and a variety of borders.

In this final sample, there is no floral quilting. I have included it to show how, in our Bonus class, adding Color Effects with Derwent, I will also be showing you how to create watercolor style backgrounds. This organic swoop of deep blue is a perfect backdrop for a winter quilt I am working on. It features watercolor- like blurring, color movement, and splotches (created on real watercolor when splattered with fresh water or alcohol).
