Sweet Tooth

Quilting and Improv Piecing Workshop

SWEET!!! Oh yes...so very sweet. Inspired by chocolate covered strawberries ... this adorable wall hanging will teach you three amazing mini classes in one.

First: A 30 minute piecing lecture and demonstration creating a deckle edge border with asymmetrically mitered corners. Take the fear out of not having a pattern...this technique turns out amazing with very little effort, and because it gets cut down before use...there are no bias worries.

Next: A 1:45 drawing and demonstration class teaching the molar feather. This free motion feather is one of the best feathers for new and aspiring feather quilt artists. It is non-backtrack and has a lot of embellishment opportunity. Because of its non-uniform shape, it is tremendously success-oriented. We will carefully examine its formation, tricks for getting it to look lovely, move, nest, and twirl into tight inside and outside curves. As a master quilter who has taught thousands of students to feather, I am confident you will feel empowered to be feathering on all your quilts after this class. This wall hanging puts them on hearts, however this feather is a building block to a lifetime of success with free motion quilted feathers in all circumstances. Class is essentially taught three times. Once as a drawing class. Then every technique is demonstrated on a longarm, then a sit down table machine.

Then: Using rulers with your machine quilting is taught with two rulers, a reflecting paisley, to make hearts, and a arc, to execute curved cross hatching. Beginning with safety and proper holding tips to avoid hand fatigue and continuing with how to apply pressure consistently and prevent slippage. Again, class is demonstrated on both kinds of machines.

Finally: These two lessons are brought together to make molar feathered hearts! Techniques of continuous completion of the feathering and the ruler work, as well as how to properly reflect feathers on dividing lines are taught.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the course start and finish?
The course starts now and never ends! It is a completely self-paced online course - you decide when you start and when you finish.
How long do I have access to the course?
How does lifetime access sound? After enrolling, you have unlimited access to this course for as long as you like - across any and all devices you own.
What kind of quilting experience should I have?
The quilting portions of class are being taught on a confident beginner level. You should have some free motion quilting experience and understand the principles of free motion quilting on your personal machine. The piecing component of class is also well within the reach of a confident beginner. If you can sew a 1/4" seam and are capable of starting and stopping on a drawn dot with a backstitch, you can sew this amazing border.
Is there any live interaction with this class?
No. I am sure you will feel class content is very thorough. If you enjoy the idea of a personal class, with group support and ongoing feedback, please join me for one of my masterclasses offered throughout the year. Please click "ok to email" during checkout so you hear about when those classes become available.
Are there Closed Captions?
Yes. The (English) auto generated Closed Captions can be toggled on and off.
What supplies will I need?
You will want just practice fabric and batting to start class. The pattern for the sweet wallhanging is a pdf and includes fabric directions, however at 37" x 37" it isn't much fabric. You can practice ruler quilting with any quilting ruler. To make nested hearts like these, you may want the Love Lines nested heart set I manufacture or any similar nested heart product. An arc or circle template will also be needed to try curved crosshatching. Links and a resource guide are imbedded in the firs unit of class.
Will I need a special foot for my sewing machine for ruler quilting?
Yes. For safety reasons, you must have a ruler hopping foot. This is a high wall, fully enclosed circle foot to prevent a ruler from going under the needle. Without one, you risk serious damage to your machine and potentially yourself with broken flying needles or acrylic.
Will I be charged tax for a digital class? Why?
US and global laws are changing quickly and vary state by state with regards to sales tax on digital items. The Teachable paying platform will automatically charge the appropriate tax as it applies to an individual state's laws or country tax code. Allowing a large platform like teachable to handle changing tax laws keeps me from needing to file in multiple states or be exposed to audit.

I hope you will join me and explore two foundational quilting techniques, as well as a fun piecing technique. This class will give you a deep inside look into what it would be like to take a masterclass with me at some point in the future, with of course the added benefit of several months of 1:1 feedback and community support from fellow quilters.

Happy Quilting!
